2017 in Review and 2018 Goals

Another year another one of these big long posts, yay! Every year I write these posts and I love looking back at them. Here are all of them:

2013 in Review
2014 in Review (my favorite year, I love that GP wasn't even on my radar)
2015 in Review
2016 in Review

It was a good year :)
2017 Goals
- Rico recovers from internal pigeon fever
Rico recovered but had to basically be fully retired afterward due to the illness taking away all of his muscle and my busy schedule not having any time to bring him back into any sort of shape. I did get to canter him and passage him this winter so I'm calling that a win!

- Trail ride Rico (if he's okay)
I did this and it was wonderful even though it was only the short loop :)

- Take Rico to the beach (if he's okay)
Not this year, maybe next year

- Mom gets her unicorn pony
Yes! My family welcomed Sunny into the picture and he has been a unicorn.

- Steal Mom's unicorn to jump and play with a bit
Unfortunately Sunny has silicosis and had to retire from jumping, so I haven't jumped him at all.

- TC stays sound (stifle + suspensory) and doesn't drain my bank account too much for vet stuff
So far so good (Though he still has a couple days left in the year!), he only tried to drain my bank account once with his cold earlier this month. Thanks for letting me replenish my savings account this year, TC.

- TC moves to a bigger paddock or pasture
Yes! He moved to a bigger paddock in early March

- register TC with USDF and USEF (so uh, pick a show name)
Yes! His name is The Alchemist and I love it

- reregister myself with USDF/USEF/CDS
Yep!

- trail ride TC
YES! This happened in June and then again in the fall. Hopefully more next year.

- ride in a few clinics
Yep! I rode in the bombproofing clinic in March, rode with Tanya Vik in April, rode with Jeremy Steinberg in August, and rode in another bombproofing clinic in November.

- (or) find a regular trainer who works for us
I rode with Tracey a few times, but am currently looking for another trainer.

- learn to sit TC's trot
Done, I'm not great at it but I'm

- put all lateral work on
Everything is there but not confirmed yet!

- work on changes in the fall/winter
We did touch on these but not very much

- mayyybe start pi/pa in the fall/winter
Not this year

Training Level Goals
- show TC at Training Level
Yes! We competed at six different rated shows at Training level

- qualify for All Breeds at Training level
Yes, and we WON

- get the Training level performance award (10 tests above 60% at 4 different competitions, 4 different judges, 4 at T3)
We only got nine (I think) this year, next year we'll finish it up.

- qualify for CDS Championships at Training (if we'd be competitive, probably not)
Nope, didn't start showing early enough, plus it's CRAZY expensive.

First Level Goals
- show TC at First Level (all of the First level things are stretch goals)
Yes! We did actually do First this year but he was kind of a nut so we didn't score super well

- get a score above 65% at Training 2 or above 62% at First 2 to get him a Bronze Elite FSA status
Yes! TC is now a Bronze Elite Friesian Sporthorse

- qualify TC for a First Level Freestyle (1-3 score at 60%+)
Next year

- qualify for All Breeds at First Level
Didn't start soon enough for 2017, maybe 2018.

- start on the First Level performance award (10 tests above 60% at 4 different competitions, 4 different judges, 4 at 1-3)
We got one score

- qualify for CDS Championships at First (if we'd be competitive, probably not)
Didn't get started early enough so no

I love this bookstore

 Key Moments of 2017

The end of 2016 was fairly terrible. Rico had been diagnosed with Internal Pigeon Fever and Peritonitis, a secondary but equally deadly internal bacterial infection of unknown cause. In addition, TC had ended the year with stifle problems, chiropractic issues, and a suspected stomach ulcer.

Wasn't able to ride him so we just walked

In January, the month started out with a bang as I was in Portland for New Years, escaping the horses, who were stressing me out beyond belief. Rico had been hospitalized, and TC was unrideable. Then Rico took a turn for the worse and had to be rushed to the hospital yet again, and TC blew up a leg and came up lame- that all happened in the same weekend. I lost it. I pulled away from dressage and turned my thoughts on trying to find the FUN in horses, all while doing ground work with TC to try to get him prepared to go into pasture for an unknown amount of time.

In February, I started the month with a visit to San Diego with Peony to visit L! Throughout the month Kate entertained me by letting me jump the Ginger pony a few times, who was a super fun alternative to my not very fun young horse. I wrote one of my favorite posts about baseline gaits, even though I was struggling (but doing better than January) with TC. I ended the month with watching the Jeremy Steinberg clinic up in Davis, which Peony was riding in. This clinic really started the change that I would experience in my relationship with TC.

I have the best friends, Peony sent me ICE
CREAM at the beginning of the year <3

Best pony ever! Except when she stops at 18" fences with me
because keeping your leg on is optional, right?
In March, TC moved to a giant paddock after stepping on me and getting loose. He stayed sound, meaning that his blown up leg in January was very mild. Unknowingly to the blog, I put TC up for sale and spoke with a friend about buying him. Then as I started to bring him back to work to get him prepped for sale, I realized things were changing. With my new found confidence with the horse, I rode him in a clinic and it didn't go so well because the clinician seemed scared of him. I was told to not take him off the property, so I did just that. I started to prioritize traveling for TC and we went to the bombproofing clinic I had really wanted to go to after auditing last year. He was brilliant and I think it set us on a great path. But then the next day he went lame. It ended up being an abscess, phew. Also in March, I found out that my long time boyfriend was moving to Pittsburgh, PA for graduate school, but I kept that off the blog.

In April, we traveled almost every weekend, mostly to the ranch, but we also went to the Horse Park for our first schooling show of the year. TC was very worried but we got through Training 2 and First 1 and met up with Olivia and Kate. I discussed a bit about TC's training and how I was dealing with our problem of anticipating everything. I also confessed to being completely obsessed and dependent on my equisense tracker. We ended the month with a lesson with Tracey at home, which was amazing and set us on an excellent path.

Bombproofing clinic, probably the first time I
smiled on this horse all year

Some of my favorite people!!
In May, TC and I finally conquered the back loop with no problems and I even started riding him bareback a bit. We went to our second schooling show and had a great time, winning both of our classes at Training level with scores in the 70s. Rides were going well, though TC remained plagued by his hatred of birds. We went out to ASH for our first lesson off the property (and second of the year) with Tracey where TC was excellent. Things were going super until I had a fight with TC and it set us back for two weeks. I managed to help TC find the fun in riding again and things started going better. At the end of the month, I flew out to a conference in Washington DC and met up with Austen and Emma for Memorial Day.

In June, my mom found and then bought her unicorn pony, Sunny. When I got home from DC, I met up with a ton of Norcal bloggers as well as Jen and we had an epic blogger trail ride, which was a blast. The next weekend, Kate and I zipped up to watch Nicole and Alyssa at Camelot and then went to Horse Expo with Peony. June was for sure the month of blogger meetups! That same weekend, I showed TC again at another schooling show and he was a nut. We earned some hilarious comments but I was frustrated, feeling like the rated shows at the end of July might be a bad idea. But TC showed me that he can be confusing by then being great at his second lesson at ASH and on his first trail ride in eighteen months. We ended out the month discovering that TC has a collected canter!

Such a fun blogger meetup!

Camelot!

DC with Austen and Emma and amazing food

In July, I started off the month with an eight day trip to Marquette, MI to spend the 4th with family and Pittsburgh, PA under the guise to visit Jan and explore a new city, though we were actually scoping out what I thought would be my new home this fall. During this time I reflected that I actually missed TC. On that trip, I wrote one of my favorite posts- eliminating static. And despite the bad schooling show, TC gave me enough confidence in lessons to buy his memberships. The month wouldn't be complete without yet more traveling, so bf and I headed to his parents' lake house. I also shared the worst news about Sunny, my mom's pony. TC's training continued to go well, as I posted about finding positive tension with him. And after a really great lesson, we debuted in the rated show ring, not once but twice this month.

In August, I spent another weekend in Pittsburgh after bf moved, though kept it off the blog. During that time I wrote a bit about how TC had garnered a lot of attention at shows, but that I wasn't ready to sell him yet. I also talked a bit about what I do to deal with TC's chronic spooking. When I came back, TC and I zipped up north to visit Peony and to ride in a clinic with Jeremy Steinberg. I got a lot out of the clinic, including some information on how far Jeremy thought TC could go in dressage. The following two weekends, we showed again and again, finishing out our stint at Training Level. We began to look forward toward First level, evaluating what we needed to do to get there both in and out of the show ring.

Fourth of July in Michigan

Trail riding with Jan!

Showing at a rated show for the first time!
In September, I once again began the month in Pittsburgh visiting bf, keeping it off the blog. I celebrated my second year with TC, with a much more positive post than our first year's. After my Pittsburgh visit, Kate brought me out for a clinic, which was super fun. And TC and I hit the trails again. I picked up a book that explained why TC was a misery to train, and continued reading Academic Horsemanship, leading me to write another one of my favorite posts, levels of pressure. I also rode my favorite horse, Rico, out on the "trails" this month. TC and I ended the month schooling Second 1 and jumping a little bit. I also moved into my new tack room!

In October, big surprise, I was in Pittsburgh the first week, then Virginia for a wedding. I filled in the time talking about being at my job for a year and what TC is afraid of. Upon returning from the week off, I had a minor loss of confidence as TC came back into work being a nut. In typical me fashion, I was gone the weekend after I got back from Pennsylvania and Virginia - my brother and SIL took me to Universal Studios in LA. During that weekend, I signed up for a show, so I started to prepare for it. I finally got to take a lesson from Tracey, which went well but was really hard. And then we ended the month with our last show of the year, which went super well! The first day was a bit rough, we had some lower scores, but the second day went much better even though he literally entered the ring spooking. Time for a blog name change I think.

I can't stop with this picture, maybe one day I'll do him justice

A Enter Spooking, omg please stop reading my blog, TC

I could use a butterbeer right now pls
In November, I spent the first week of the month in Washington D.C. for another conference, seeing Austen and meeting Bast (for some reason I can't find a post for that, I'm a slacker). Bf came down to visit DC and then took me back to Pennsylvania for a few days. Things started to break down there and really hit the fan at the end of the month. I was supposed to move in mid November but in October, I pushed it out to the spring because I could tell something was off.

Turns out that he was happy to have me make a massive sacrifice to move across the country for him, but wasn't going to marry me any time soon (if at all, he had no answer other than "uhh maybe?" when I asked about it) and couldn't guarantee that I'd have any say in where we lived ever because apparently since I refuse to give up my hobbies and my friends and my family for my job, I must not care about it, so I should sacrifice my whole life for his career. Cue an eye roll that knocked me out for several days.

I broke up with him at the end of the month. It was relief like I've never felt. I had control over my own life again and wasn't bound to someone who turned out to be a selfish asshole. All this was kept off the blog (but I decided to write about it now because it actually was a huge part of my year) because this is a horse blog, not a Megan-complains-about-her-personal-life blog.

No! It's a blog about this weirdo who LOVES TO SHOW like
way more than he should

I'm the best pony there ever was right?
On a lighter note, everything else was wonderful in November. I decided that this winter was going to be the winter of breadth, taking off the pressure to keep TC going. I also talked about how I actually liked the time change for the first time ever. I wrote about what my day-to-day life is like. I talked about how TC loves attention, even negative attention, and how I've been addressing his impatient behavior. TC and I went to our second bombproofing clinic and that went pretty well even though I discovered that a year's worth of travels didn't prevent him from rearing at the trailer over and over. Kate, L, and I hung out over Thanksgiving break. I started clicker training TC and we made some major progress on the long lines. I rode Rico and finally got to feel the canter and his passage again. L was my Secret Santa and got me Feed XL for a month, which was so awesome.

In December, Kate came out to the barn and let me use her soloshot so then I kicked her and stole it decided that I really wanted one. I continued to use clicker training to help my horse learn to push better from behind on the long lines. I went up to visit Peony and audit Jeremy Steinberg, which was super helpful. TC was great about me stepping up my game while riding him. I also posted about how TC and I won All Breeds! I also talked a bit about how my lifestyle has changed, and some of the good and bad effects of that. Unfortunately TC couldn't go a full year with no vet visit, so he got a bit sick and the vet came out to look at him and give him SMZs. During this time, I long lined him with the clicker. Eventually he was fine to ride again and we made some serious progress using some cones. To finish up the year, I looked back at our show season and enjoyed my winter break.

The best pony

Overall

I'm so happy with how this year went! TC and I came so far. In the very beginning of the year I couldn't even ride him. And so many lessons, off property trips, clinics, trail rides, and shows later. So many bareback rides and days spent grooming him while telling him if he ever turns white I'll sell him. So many good times later, we've overcome so much and he's becoming, slowly, my dream horse.

The Traveling Hippo

This year I had a major goal: get TC to be better in new places.

For quite a while, hauling somewhere with TC had been a really stressful ordeal. I was really stressed about it, he was really stressed about it. It made me not want to take him anywhere at all. But I love to show and I love to trail ride, so there was only one option, go EVERYWHERE.

So I made 2017 the year of traveling. And it worked.

Our first score in the 70s was at this show where he was just... fine

For our first trips in March and April, TC was a nut and I wasn't confident at all. We stuck with traveling mostly to the ranch where I felt comfortable and could control the situation, but coming into summer, we started branching out.

The first time I noticed something was changing was at GG for the schooling show, he just... was fine. And then going to ASH the same month, he was also just... fine. And even staying overnight and riding with Jeremy, he was tense but not in the explosive way he was earlier in the year. And by the end of the year, we were able to do a rated show in a brand new location, scoring into the 70s! I'd call that a successful year.

Here's the breakdown...

No Travels

I had wanted to take him to the ranch (but there's pigeon fever there this time of year and I'm being safe) and/or on a trail ride (he got sick and then this week I've had less time than I thought) and/or to Kate's barn (that still may happen and I'll edit this post), but after he got sick, I've kind of just been enjoying him at home this month. This is the winter of breadth, yes, but it's also the winter of no stress for me.

Next year I hope we have even MORE travels! I can't wait until TC is as good as Rico- the sort of horse I can hop on bareback at a new location- but at this point, I don't even need that to come anytime soon. I feel really confident that he's going to get there eventually, and while I'm looking forward to that time, I'm excited to go through the journey too.

Also maybe next year, I'll address the elephant in the room........ the rearing hippo at the trailer.

SO BORED MUST REAR

wanted to get in there VERY FAST because SHOWING IS
THE BEST LET'S DO THIS

Because we mostly did Training 2 and Training 3, I did individual test evaluations.

Based on this, our best movement is our second trot circle (left) with a 7.5 average, followed by the second diagonal (from left to right) with a 7.42. Our worst movement is the right canter circle with an average of 6.08. It's so funny because I generally think that our better direction is right, though TC does get better throughout the test. It would be interesting to compare the mirror image test- is he truly better to the left or is he better later in the test.

It makes sense that the right lead canter would be rough- first, there are those couple of low scores you can see in the spark line (5s) because he was bucking. He gets more relaxed as the test goes on, but relaxation in the canter means bucking sometimes because he gets behind my leg. I still think it's interesting that the left lead canter circle is almost a full point above the right lead circle. Weird.

His trot work is holding steady at 7s, but we clearly need to get better in our walk to trot transition, which is a low 6.58. I'm surprised that our free walk is a 7 and our stretch trot is above a 7, though the stretch trot is brought up by the really high scores (8-8.5) I got in our first test and our last.

Stupidest Display of Athleticism? This one when he just
started leaping through his canter work

First things first, I think it's funny that we have a couple of really consistent movements- both our left lead canter transition and our right loop were 7s in all four tests. Generally it looks like this test started out being good for us and then got worse and worse. We started with scores in the 70s and ended with a 65. That... doesn't look so great. I don't know if this is because this test was always our second test, and that at the later shows, I was trying to fix his bucking so was riding him a bit more in warm up (and it wasn't working). I don't know if the first couple of judges were just easier (they actually were). Or just bad luck, like our super low right lead canter transition in the last test that was  a 4.

I will definitely look into this test a bit more at the beginning of the upcoming season. Is the lower scores in this one a fundamental problem in TC's training? Or just a bunch of random bad luck or a test that he's just not great at and who cares? I'll be answering these questions over the winter and we'll see what comes of it!

Stupidest Rider Moment? When I forgot
to hand off my phone so it slipped out of
my back brace and I had to fling it out

and pick it up
Rated Show Collectives:
Average Gaits: 7.35
Median Gaits: 7
Range: 7-8.5
We pretty much earned 7s and 7.5s with the occasional 8 or 8.5. I tended to ride him slightly quiet in shows because he could be a little silly. The first judge of the season (CeeCee Moss-Giovanetti) really liked him, giving him an 8 and an 8.5 for gaits and getting my hopes up a bit. Oh well, that's life! Happy to have my 7-7.5 pony.

Average Impulsion: 7
Median Impulsion: 7
Range: 6.5-7.5
Impulsion was quite high at the beginning of the season with all of the 7.5s but ended up being more like 6.5-7 later in the season. I believe that was because of the stickiness at the August shows and the silliness at Greenville.

Average Submission: 6.7
Median Submission: 6.5
Range: 6-7.5
Given that TC had some kind of bobble in all tests, I was expecting submission to be lower.

Average Rider Position:7.3
Median Rider Position: 7.25
Range: 6.5-8
My position varies. I sit okay in the tack and TC takes up my leg nicely, but all year I was battling crookedness, and I also pretty much always look down. Depending on a) how the judge feels about those things vs my strengths and b) whether I manage to look nicer in a show, my score will vary quite a lot. The tests I got 8s on were when TC was being better too, so I'm sure I don't sit as well if he's being a dingbat.

Average Rider Effectiveness: 7
Median Rider Effectiveness: 7
Range: 6.5-7.5
I about expected this. It'd be odd to get a bunch of 70s at this level and not have the judges think that I'm about 70% effective. For the most part, these were all 7s actually. I got one 6.5 and one 7.5.

Basilisk Moment of the Year

Notable Overall Comments:

"Bounding gaits, articulate" - for our 8.5 on gaits, feels good

"Explodes at times" - yep this is true

"Very calm and obedient until canter" - the theme of this year's show season

"Nice jump in canter" - he does, sometimes too much though

Notable Movement Comments:

"Good recovery :)" - after TC bolted up centerline

"Good riding" - when I prevented TC from leaping

"Disruption" - constantly

"Playful, not called for" - TC! No playing in the show ring!

"Humping, jumping" - when TC was leaping in the canter

"Obedient through topline in depart, then humping back" - even more leaping

"Kicks at leg" - at the canter in our early shows when he was behind my leg

"Slightly distracted in halt" - just all the fucking time

"Kicks out, loses lead"

"Nice jump, tail a little active"

Overall it was a great season!
Hopefully next year we'll both move up a level and improve those scores! I think that if we can get his playfulness under control and put in more consistent tests, that will not be a problem. And I'm working hard on getting him to use his back a bit more (impulsion) and step into the bridle better, so hopefully that will mean that the move up to First level (the official one vs the for fun one at the end of last season) will be great!

Stay tuned for tomorrow's post on all the touchy feely stuff about what this show season meant to me and what we learned.
