A Copilot Update

Well, it’s been three months and I’m still on the copilot train. This has been the longest I’ve been able to stick to anything consistently since CrossFit and I’m loving it.

(this is not the bay btw)

I’ve had a couple of times where I’ve had to skip workouts and that’s usually when I’ll lose momentum. For example, when I fell off of Sunny, my arm was really sore for about a week. I warned my coach that I was going to probably take a week off, and she was totally fine with it. Sure enough, after a week, she checked in with me and asked how I was doing and if she could program something easier for me to do if my arm was still hurting. At that point, I was feeling better, so I just asked her to reduce the weight a bit on my bench press that week. And then I was back to it.

After getting back to it, I was going to be in LA for almost a week for Lunar New Year. I moved my Saturday workout to Thursday before we left, but I’d still be there for my Monday and Wednesday workout. I told her I was worried I might not be able to work out, but it turned out that my SO’s cousin had a gym outside. I told her what the equipment would let me do, and we modified my workouts so I could do them down there. I ended up forgetting the days of the week and moving Monday’s to Tuesday and she checked in with me on Tuesday morning to make sure that I could do it then. She’s super nice, so it doesn’t feel like nagging, but it’s really great to have some accountability.

I had to stop to take a picture of this bird

I think that’s the big thing I need. When I did CrossFit initially in 2013, I didn’t have many friends at the gym, so it was hard for me to go regularly. I averaged two to three days a week and would skip weeks frequently for one reason or another.

Then when I returned to CrossFit in 2018, I had a TON of friends at the gym, so I went every day since I’d always feel like I’d missed out on fun if I didn’t go.

Then when I moved back to the bay, I struggled again because the people at the gyms I tried out were just… not my kind of people. I thought I just needed friends, so when the SO wanted to get a home gym, I felt like that wasn’t going to work for me. The pandemic hit and so I stopped working out.

I tried a bunch of stuff, but Copilot seems to be the ticket for me. It combines the accountability I got from my friends at my 2018 CrossFit and the programming (aka I don’t have to think of something to do) that I got from CrossFit. Plus, my coach is a CrossFit coach (among other certifications), so I’ve asked for workouts that feel like CrossFit workouts. I really like the variety!

TC says thanks for getting fitter so
you can stop being afraid of my gaits

I think the true test will come in the summer when it’s really hot outside and it becomes harder to fit in the workouts without feeling like death in the heat (our gym is outside). Although my work does have a gym! But it is closed due to the pandemic. Hopefully it'll open up soon, Omicron is plummeting and my area is something like 95% vaccinated + boosted.
